Learn to Row Frequently Asked Questions

We are so excited that you will be joining us for Novice Sweep or Novice Sculling!  Here is what you can expect:

Where are the classes held?

All sessions are held at the Alexandria boathouse located at 1 Madison Street, Alexandria, VA 22314.  There is a parking lot directly in front of the boathouse. If the lot is full, free street parking is available in the surrounding area.  Parking can prove a little tricky in the evenings as the boathouse is located close to both a park and a popular gym, so please give yourself plenty of time to find a space.

What will happen during the first class?

The first session will be an introduction to the boathouse facilities and the rowing equipment.  The groups will also view the USRowing safety video and spend some time on the rowing machines learning the rowing stroke.  If time permits, we will discuss basic boat handling.

What should I wear?

For all sessions, please wear exercise clothing (shorts, t-shirt, socks, sneakers), preferably that is close fitting so it will not get caught in the rowing equipment.  Some participants find sunglasses and/or a hat to be helpful on sunny days.

Do I need any equipment?

Other than a bottle of water to take in the boat with you, ACR will provide all the equipment you will need.

Are there locker rooms?

Yes, ACR has locker rooms available if you are coming directly from work and not able to change ahead of time.  However, most (if not all) lockers are assigned so are not available for use.

Can I miss a class?

A lot of learning occurs during the novices programs, especially during the first five sessions.  We strongly encourage attendance at all sessions, but if you need to miss a class, it is not a big deal.  Please let your coach know ahead of time, so she/he can plan appropriately.

What if it is raining or storming outside?

We will meet rain or shine!  ACR has wonderful indoor facilities.  Our goal is to get on the water as much as possible, but if weather prevents us from going on the water, we will do an indoor workout.

Novice Sweep/Sculling was great!  What can I do next?

The next step after the novice programs is Sweep I or Sculling I.  Information about the programs is available on the Programs page
