Terry Grindstaff
Recreational Sculling

Terry began coaching the Sculling II program in 2002. He began coaching in 1999, as an assistant to Mike Porterfield for novice sculling. He managed and coached the ACR novice sculling program for two years. Terry has been rowing at ACR since 1993 when his two daughters rowed for TC Williams, and has since participated in many local and regional regattas. He is often down at the boathouse training rowers to drive launches, or winterizing outboards and of course, rowing. Terry is a budget manager at the Environmental Protection Agency.

Peter Hearding
Men's Competitive Sweep

Pete Hearding rowed for TC Williams High School ('97) and was named to the Washington Post All-Met Team his senior year. He continued rowing at Syracuse University as a freshman. After graduating and returning to Alexandria, Pete has coached a variety of programs, including summer crew and introductory programs for both juniors and adults. He has been a member of the TC Williams coaching staff since 2002 and currently coaches the JV boys. Last fall, Pete coached the Old Dominion Boat Club, a select high school team, through a successful season, including a win at the Head of the Potomac. This is Pete's 2nd season coaching the Men's Competitive Sweep program. During the day, Pete works for Congressman Jim Moran. Pete and his fiance, (ACR Rower/TC Coach/Biology Teacher Extraordinaire) Lexye Street, just bought a house, will be married this August, and spend a lot of time debating whether or not they really have time for a dog.

Nick Johnson
Open Competitive Sculling

Nick began his rowing career at Virginia Tech, setting many records, earning many medals, and otherwise setting the world on fire. Upon graduation, he went to Athens, OH for a very brief stint as head coach of the men's team at Ohio University, before getting a real job and taking up bike racing. After a few years of sitting at a desk, Nick quit his day job and began coaching the Holton-Arms School Crew Team. In the summer of '06, he also began coaching the competitive sculling team at ACR. When he's not coaching, Nick likes to pretend that he still races bikes and still knows how to row.

Daron Keller
Novice and Level One Sculling

Daron Keller has been a member of ACR since 1994, but also rowed in High School and Graduated with "Remember the Titans," TC William's first combined class. Daron teaches the Novice and Level One Sculling classes, as well as the Sweep to Scull class for ACR. When he is not coaching, you can see him rowing a yellow single. Daron also is a Level 2 Alpine Ski Instructor and teaches at Whitetail's Childrens center when it is too cold to row.

Recreational Sweep

Matt, a TC Williams 1992 alum, returned to the Boathouse after his schooling in Charlottesville. Matt took up coaching in Alexandria in the summer of 2004 for the Summer Crew program and for Alexandria Community Rowing where his coaching and coxing skills have earned him praise.

Singles Sculling

Jaime Rubini has been coaching sculling at ACR for many years. In the afternoons, he is West Potomac Crew's Head Coach and ODBC's sculling coach. He is a nationally competitive Masters rower whose name often can be found in first place. Jaime has an impressive rowing history with so many medals over so many years we could not possibly name them all! He is a fixture in the rowing community. He is also an artisan! Rubini's Jewelry is well known for his distinctive rowing designs.

Peter Stramese
Women's 5 Day Competitive Sweep

Peter Stramese is ACR's head sweep coach and has been coaching the ACR women's open sweep team since 1998 and has been on the ACR coaching staff since 1997. Peter's previous coaching experience includes Head Coach at New Hampshire's Notre Dame Academy, freshman coach at Walt Whitman High School and sculling coach at Craftsbury Sculling Center. Peter rowed competitively for the University of Massachusetts at Lowell. Currently, Peter oversees all ACR equipment maintenance and serves as the maintenance representative to the ACR steering committee. He holds a Masters of Science in electrical engineering and is a professional engineer. Peter runs in his spare time, having completed seven marathons.

Laura Thornhill
Women 4 Day Competitive Sweep

Laura has recently joined the ACR coaching staff, having relocated to the DC area from Kansas City. She rowed for four years at the University of Kansas, and began coaching for KU Crew in 1998. Since, she has coached for the KU Women's Rowing Team and the Kansas City Rowing Club, where she worked with Juniors and Masters in both sweep and sculling. In spite of real life, she has continued to row, having twice completed the Natchitoches Marathon Rowing Championships, among other races. A writer and attorney by training, she is working toward a career in the public service. Laura is proud to carry on the tradition of irrigation ditch rowing, and is thrilled to be a part of ACR.

Nate Walker
Recreational Sweep

Nate rowed four years at Purdue University, and upon graduation, coached their novice men for the 2005-2006 season. He later moved to DC in the summer of '06 and joined forces with the mighty ACR Women 4-a-Dayers. You can see him and his ladies woopin' it up on the mighty Potomac early, early in the AM, or at Georgetown's Bicycle ProShop where he works for the man.

Masters Sculling for Competition

George began coaching for ACR in 2003 and has coached both sculling and sweep programs. His previous experience includes incoming freshman at the U.S. Naval Academy, novice boys at TC Williams, and novice boys and girls at GC Marshall High School. George began rowing at Marietta (OH) High School and he rowed at Navy for four years. Following college, he rowed for several years with clubs in California and Washington DC. George is a professional engineer and provides environmental engineering support to the Department of Defense.
